Department of Computer Technologies
The Department of Computer Technologies, a structural unit of KUL NASU, was established in 2008 on the basis of the Computer Systems Laboratory at the initiative of the Rector, Professor and Honoured Lawyer of Ukraine Yurii Ladyslavovych Boshytskyi.
The history of our structural unit dates back to the time of the Higher School of Law.
In 1999, a computer and information systems classroom was established to support the institution’s operations and educational process. It contained 15 personal computers. Immediately after it was established, its staff began building a local computer network that connected the computer classroom, departments, and other units of the educational institution into a single network.
The modern approach to education at Kyiv University of Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine required the local computer network to be expanded, all structural units to be connected, and access to the Internet to be provided. The Centre’s staff therefore addressed the complex challenge of working with Internet service providers. Through the joint efforts of the University administration and Department specialists, a high-speed Internet access system was launched in January 2000. It made it possible to modernise the institution’s information infrastructure, improve the efficiency of the existing network, and leave room for its maximum expansion in response to the changing requirements of a modern higher education institution.
To provide University-wide computer education and equip students with the information technology knowledge and skills required for their future careers as highly qualified professionals, the University introduced extensive use of educational information resources in the learning process, primarily to support students’ independent study.
Once the University was connected to the Internet, it became necessary to create a University website. Interestingly, the first website was developed not by professionals but by third-year law students A. Hrodzynskyi, D. Semchenko, and V. Kuzmchevskyi. In November 2000, the first pages appeared under the domain name WWW.KUL.KIEV.UA, which remains assigned to the University today.

The next step in developing the University’s technical infrastructure was the introduction of part-time distance learning in December 2002. This form of study enabled students and lecturers to communicate online, receive assignments, hold consultations, and assess knowledge while hundreds or even thousands of kilometres apart. Over time, the Centre underwent the natural generational change experienced by any team. Talented and promising young staff with an active outlook and up-to-date knowledge began working alongside experienced employees.
A new website for Kyiv University of Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was launched on 1 September 2009. Step by step, the University continues to develop in different areas, while its website serves as its public face.
The need to update the website had existed for some time, as the previous design no longer met the needs of a modern university. The Centre’s staff and the Rector therefore decided to radically change the institution’s digital presence. The changes produced unexpected but very welcome results: the simple, outdated interface was replaced by an attractive, modern, and comprehensive website that vividly reflected the dynamic development of Kyiv University of Law of NASU. Statistics showed that more than 27,000 visitors reached the University through the website during its first year.
Today, the Department’s principal task is to introduce modern information and communication technologies that further improve the educational process, make education more accessible and effective, and prepare students of Kyiv University of Law of NASU for life in the information society.
