A round table on the topic ‘May 8 – Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation’ took place at KUL NASU
On May 8, 2024, a round table on the topic was held at the Kyiv University of Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine: May 8 – Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation, the organizer of which was an associate professor of the Department of General Theoretical Legal and Socio-Humanitarian Disciplines Olena Romanova.
By the law of Ukraine “On the Commemoration of the Victory over Nazism in the Second World War of 1939–1945” The Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation has been established, which is observed every year on May 8 with the aim of honoring the memory of all victims of World War II.
By establishing this commemorative date, Ukraine sought to join the European tradition of celebrating the victory in the Second World War, honoring all fighters against Nazism and the victims of the war. It also serves as a reminder that the war began as a result of agreements between two totalitarian regimes: the National Socialist (Nazi) regime in Germany and the communist regime in the USSR. From 1939 to 1945, both totalitarian regimes committed numerous crimes against humanity, war crimes, and acts of genocide on Ukrainian soil, causing enormous losses to the Ukrainian, Jewish, Crimean Tatar, and other peoples who lived within the territory of present-day Ukraine.
The full-scale war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine sharply raised the question of rethinking important issues of the Second World War.
The participants of the round table explored the following topics:
- The contribution of Ukrainians to the victory over Nazism in World War II.
- The occupation regime in Ukraine during World War II.
- The outcomes of World War II for Ukraine.
- The red poppy is a symbol of remembrance.
First-year university students took part in this event.
Among the guests present is a lecturer of the Department of General Theoretical Legal and Socio-Humanitarian Disciplines Volodymyr Pavlov. During the event, the students presented pre-prepared presentations, asked each other questions, discussed, and expressed their own views and positions.
The round table meeting was held online on the Google Meet platform. After the session, the results were summarized.
