At KUL NASU, the textbook ‘Jurisprudence in Quotes and Aphorisms’ was published
In the publishing series of the Kyiv University of Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, a textbook was published “Jurisprudence in Quotes and Aphorisms” under the general editorship of the university rector, professor, Honored Lawyer of Ukraine Yuriy Ladislavovych Boshytskyi. This innovative publication combines philosophical, theological, and legal approaches, revealing law as a multidimensional phenomenon of culture, spirituality, and thought.
Author collective consisting of Yuriy Boshytskyi, Oleksiy Braslavets, Nataliya Veselovska, Volodymyr Pavlov and Svitlana Stezhko he managed to present law not only as a set of norms, but as the spiritual experience of humanity, preserved in words. The book collects the statements of ancient philosophers, Church Fathers, Roman jurists, and thinkers of the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Modern era.
The publication is unique in that it systematizes aphorisms and legal maxims in a thematic section that encompasses theological, philosophical, cultural, and rhetorical understanding of law. Five chapters — “Law through the Prism of Theology and Philosophy”, «Digests: Law and Power in Sentences and Sayings», “Tradition: Law in the Proverbs and Sayings of the Peoples of the World”, ‘Sentences of Roman Law’ and «AD VERBUM» — constructed as an integral space of spiritual and professional knowledge. In the structure of the book, the reader will find quotes from classical sources, folk wisdom, Latin formulas, and theological treatises, which form a single line of evolution of legal thought — from moral law to legal principle.
In the preface, Professor Yuriy Boshytsky emphasizes that the goal of this edition is to show law not only as a tool for regulating social relations, but as a ‘key to understanding culture, spirituality, and the history of humanity.’ The aphorisms and sayings compiled in the book form a moral compass for the modern lawyer, helping students and teachers see the inseparable connection between law and conscience, authority and responsibility, the state and a person’s moral duty. It is through the living words of great thinkers that the 21st-century lawyer can realize that the power of the law is born from an inner desire for justice.
The manual is recommended for publication by the Academic Council of the Kyiv University of Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Its scientific reviewers were leading scholars: Ruslana Atashkade (Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv), Oleh Hanba (National Academy of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine named after Bohdan Khmelnytsky) Ruslan Katsavets (National Academy of Management) and Inna Knysh (National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute”).
The publication has not only educational but also educational significance. It contributes to the formation of the worldview integrity of the future lawyer, develops the culture of legal thinking, rhetoric, and the ability to see law in the context of human values. The appearance of the book “Jurisprudence in Quotes and Aphorisms” marks a new step of the Kyiv University of Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in strengthening the humanitarian foundation of legal education and continues the university’s tradition as a center where law, science, and spirituality create unity in serving truth and the state.
