At the Kyiv University of Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the Museum of Contemporary Legal Thought named after Yuriy Serhiyovych Shemshuchenko has been opened
On December 15, 2025, at the Kyiv University of Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the solemn opening of the Museum of Contemporary Legal Thought named after the academician took place Yuriy Serhiyovych Shemshuchenko. The event gathered members of the Scientist’s family, his colleagues and students, representatives of the scientific and legal communities, as well as everyone for whom the figure of Yuriy Shemshuchenko was a subject of sincere respect and professional authority.
During the opening, the rector of the Kyiv University of Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, professor, delivered an introductory speech Yuriy Boshytskyi. In his address, he emphasized the exceptional role of Academician Yuriy Shemshuchenko in shaping modern Ukrainian legal science, developing higher legal education, and forming the national legal doctrine, as well as highlighting the special style of his leadership, in which scientific integrity, strategic vision, foresight, and constant initiative were organically combined.
By the way, during the opening of the museum, the relatives and colleagues of Academician Yuriy Shemshuchenko were invited. In particular, his sons spoke — Oleh Shemshuchenko and Hennadiy Shemshuchenko, who expressed their sincere gratitude to the leadership of Kyiv University of Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine for the dignified and attentive commemoration of their father’s memory. Warm memories of the Scientist were also shared by his granddaughter Valeria Shemshuchenko, President of the Academy of Political and Legal Sciences of Ukraine Petro Myronenko, editor-in-chief of the newspaper ‘Legal Bulletin of Ukraine’ Viktor Kovalsky and People’s Deputy of Ukraine Stanislav ArzhevitinIn their speeches, they emphasized the multifaceted nature of Yuriy Serhiyovych, his high human qualities, dedication to science, and decisive influence on the development of modern Ukrainian legal thought.
The newly established museum is a unique scientific and educational space and consists of five thematic rooms, each of which represents different dimensions of the scientific, educational, and social activities of Academician Yuriy Shemshuchenko. The museum structure includes a library containing the Scholar’s own scientific works, as well as a specially equipped room for conducting career guidance events for students of the Sviatoshynskyi district of Kyiv, featuring informative stands dedicated to his life, scientific, and creative path. Other museum rooms create a comprehensive understanding of the evolution of modern legal thought in Ukraine, the formation of the national legal doctrine, and the intellectual environment in which Yuriy Shemshuchenko’s ideas were developed.
The purpose of establishing the Museum of Contemporary Legal Thought named after Academician Yuriy Shemschuchenko is to record and comprehend the uniqueness of this figure not only as an outstanding legal scholar, but also as a scientist with a broad worldview and a spiritual artist, whose legacy remains relevant for contemporary and future generations.
The museum’s exhibition encompasses unique archival materials, scientific works, documents, photographs, awards, and personal belongings of the Scientist, reflecting his many years of scientific, educational, and public activity. The museum is intended to become a living center for understanding the development of legal science in Ukraine and a platform for professional scientific dialogue.
The opening of the Museum of Contemporary Legal Thought named after Academician Yuriy Shemshuchenko became an important milestone in preserving and popularizing the scientific heritage of the founder of the Kyiv University of Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. This event testified to the continuity of the scientific traditions of the University and the university community’s aspiration to further develop the ideas laid down by Yuriy Serhiyovych Shemshuchenko, upholding high standards of legal education and science in Ukraine.
