Day of Remembrance of the Defenders of Ukraine

Every year on August 29, it is celebrated in Ukraine Day of Remembrance for the defenders of Ukraine who died in the struggle for the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Ukraine. This memorial day was established in 2019 by the Decree of President Volodymyr Zelensky No. 621/2019.

The date of observing the Day of Remembrance was chosen in connection with the events near Ilovaisk in 2014. At that time, the open Russian invasion led to large-scale battles and the encirclement of Ukrainian servicemen. On August 29, 2014, 366 soldiers were killed and 429 were wounded. The warriors gave their lives in the struggle for the territorial integrity and independence of Ukraine.

The purpose of the day is to remind the citizens of the country about the heroism of fallen soldiers. The symbol of the date is the sunflower, as during the days of the Ilovaisk tragedy it was abundant in the fields.

Today on this day we honor the memory of all defenders who died in the war with Russia ‒ a terrorist state. Unfortunately, in Ukraine, the Day of Remembrance of Defenders currently continues every day. Our defenders die every day and the pain of loss is unbearable and daily for their families, loved ones, and for the entire country.
