Humanity, ethics, and law: an open lecture by Iryna Yakovets was held at KUL NASU

Within the walls of the Kyiv University of Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, on May 27, an extremely relevant meeting took place with a well-known scholar, Doctor of Law. Iryna Yakovets. The event took place at the invitation of the Vice-Rector for Educational and Career Guidance Work Hanna Hurina, who initiated the discussion of issues at the intersection of law, morality, and the contemporary challenges of civilization — humane treatment of animals and ecological ethics.

During the event, Ms. Iryna focused in detail on innovations in Ukrainian legislation concerning environmental protection and animal rights. The lecturer emphasized that the level of a society’s humanity is determined by its attitude toward those who cannot protect themselves. As part of the lecture, the following was analyzed:

• European standards of environmental ethics and their implementation into the Ukrainian legal framework;
• modern legislative initiatives aimed at strengthening accountability for cruel treatment of animals;
• the role of legal science in shaping a new ecological consciousness of citizens.

The discussion about how innovations in laws can become a real tool for protecting Ukraine’s ecosystem caused particular resonance, which is especially important in times of large-scale man-made and military threats.

It is symbolic that even an air raid alert did not prevent the discussion of such an extraordinarily important topic. The participants continued their work in the shelter, demonstrating that issues of humanity and ethics are a priority under any circumstances. The resilience of the KUL NASU scientific community and the genuine interest of students in bioethics issues confirmed that the future of Ukrainian law is in reliable and attentive hands.
