University Representatives Attend Memorial Exhibition Honouring Pilot Andrii Pilshchykov

September 3, 2026

Representing Kyiv University of Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Vice-Rector for Student Development and Career Guidance Hanna Hurina and Head of the Research Library Tetiana Yaroshevska attended, at the request of Rector Yurii Boshytskyi , the presentation of a memorial exhibition dedicated to Hero of Ukraine and pilot Andrii Pilshchykovat the Yaroslav Mudryi National Library of Ukraine.

The exhibition traces the life of Major Andrii Pilshchykov, a recipient of the Order for Courage, Second and Third Class, and posthumously awarded the title Hero of Ukraine. His mother, Liliia Averianova, who curated the exhibition, took part in the presentation.

His mother carefully assembled treasured artefacts and memories, continuing her son’s noble work and preserving the memory not only of ‘Juice’, but also of the fighter pilots of the 40th Tactical Aviation Brigade. Their courageous defence of the skies over Kyiv and northern Ukraine inspired the internationally recognised image of the ‘Ghost of Kyiv’.

Andrii Pilshchykov helped defend Ukraine’s capital from the first days of the war and came to embody the legendary ‘Ghost of Kyiv’. As a leading advocate for supplying Ukraine with Western F-16 fighter aircraft, he also left a lasting mark on history.

He tragically lost his life on 25 August 2023 while carrying out a combat training mission in Zhytomyr Region. He is buried at Askold’s Grave in Kyiv. The memory of Juice — an exceptionally gifted and forward-looking aviator, a remarkable individual and a true Ukrainian patriot — lives on. His work helped inspire the Ukraine Fighter Pilots Act in the US Congress, and his name is inscribed on the memorial wall at the US National Air and Space Museum.

At the end of the presentation, Vice-Rector Hanna Hurina thanked the pilot’s mother for raising her son, for sharing such a deeply personal account of his life and courage, and for preserving his memory.

The University’s representatives also thanked the Yaroslav Mudryi National Library of Ukraine and presented it with new academic publications from the University.
