Rector Visits Hungary’s National Authority for Data Protection and Freedom of Information

September 9, 2026

Rector and Professor Yurii Boshytskyi continued his official visit to Hungary with a meeting at the National Authority for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (Nemzeti Adatvédelmi és Információszabadság Hatóság, NAIH), at the invitation of its President, Attila Péterfalvi.

Attila Péterfalvi is an honorary doctor of Kyiv University of Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and a long-standing, trusted partner of the institution. His support over many years has contributed substantially to cooperation between NAIH and the University, including opportunities for students to defend master’s dissertations on personal data protection in Hungary.

This cooperation has also supported student initiatives and meaningful leisure activities during students’ stays in Budapest. It is a partnership that goes well beyond formal professional contacts and directly expands opportunities for young people.

During the visit, Professor Yurii Boshytskyi delivered a lecture to the Authority’s staff on current issues in personal data protection in Ukraine. More than 50 employees attended, together with representatives of the Hungarian Ombudsman’s office. The lecture prompted a substantive and lively academic discussion about contemporary data protection challenges, the relevant legislation in Ukraine and European countries, and prospects for further professional and academic exchange.

The meeting also focused on strengthening online cooperation with the Authority’s legal department, organising joint academic events and preparing specialist publications.

A special moment was the presentation of an award to Attila Péterfalvi. In the presence of the Authority’s staff, Professor Yurii Boshytskyi presented him with the University’s highest distinction, the Gold Medal ‘For Service to Kyiv University of Law’, together with a commemorative medal issued for the University’s 30th anniversary.

The University awards this distinction to its most respected and influential partners, whose professional work, support and personal contributions advance the institution, strengthen its international relationships and help deliver joint educational and research projects.

The participants identified promising areas for further cooperation. In particular, they agreed to explore resuming the project enabling University students to defend master’s dissertations on personal data protection in Hungary from 2027.

Other shared plans include online conferences, research exchanges and joint academic publications on personal data protection in the European Union and Ukraine.

The Rector also donated books prepared and published by Kyiv University of Law to the Authority’s library.

The University has long placed particular importance on sharing its academic and educational publications with scholarly communities abroad. The book donation was both a gesture of respect for its partners and a continuation of the exchange of research and information, introducing European colleagues to the University’s work and Ukrainian legal scholarship.

The meeting was exceptionally warm and friendly. Its participants reaffirmed their shared interest in developing the partnership and expanding joint educational, research and professional initiatives.
