The Rector’s Greetings for Defenders of Ukraine Day

October 1, 2026

Dear defenders of Ukraine, and dear members of our University community!

On 1 October, Ukraine observes Defenders of Ukraine Day. On the same day, we also celebrate the Feast of the Protection of the Most Holy Mother of God and Ukrainian Cossacks Day — occasions that embody spiritual strength, courage and the centuries-old tradition of defending our homeland.

For Ukrainians, the Feast of the Protection has long symbolised special intercession and protection. The Ukrainian Cossacks regarded the Mother of God as their patroness, associating her protection with the honour of military service, courage and readiness to defend their land. Today, Ukraine’s defenders carry these traditions forward.

In the most difficult times, they stand on the front line, defending our state, its sovereignty and freedom, and the Ukrainian people’s right to determine their own future. Their courage and resilience have become an inseparable part of Ukraine’s modern history.

This day has particular significance for Kyiv University of Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Among those defending Ukraine are our graduates, students, lecturers and other staff. We are proud of everyone serving our homeland and remember with profound gratitude the heroes who gave their lives for Ukraine.
Their sacrifice is part of our history, our responsibility and our shared future.

Our University community works every day to advance education, research and the rule of law, and understands the price of freedom and independence. It is our duty to preserve the memory of those who defend Ukraine, support our defenders and strengthen the country through our work.

On this special day, I express my heartfelt gratitude to all Ukraine’s defenders for their courage, endurance, dedication and resilience. May the Most Holy Mother of God protect our service personnel, may the strength of the Ukrainian spirit help them persevere, and may love for their homeland sustain them.

Eternal remembrance and honour to the heroes who gave their lives for Ukraine. Honour and glory to Ukraine’s defenders! Glory to the Ukrainian Cossacks! Glory to Ukraine!
