The Research Library of Kyiv University of Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine is a modern information, educational, and research centre of the University.
The Library’s collection comprises 150,000 items. It is particularly strong in Ukrainian and international law and the social sciences and humanities, including textbooks and study guides, monographs and research collections, and theoretical and research-and-practice journals.
The collections are continually expanded with Ukrainian legal periodicals, law journals from the United States, and legal periodicals from Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Moldova, Georgia, Romania, Serbia, and other countries.
The Library actively implements information technologies. Computer workstations and free Wi-Fi in the reading room significantly broaden students’ access to information. The Student Lawyer Electronic Library is systematically expanded and updated, while the electronic catalogue is continually supplemented with bibliographic records and provides comprehensive information about the Library’s resources.
Kyiv University of Law students can borrow sets of textbooks, independently select new research and educational publications through open access in the reading room, and obtain educational and methodological materials on digital storage devices.
Each year the Library adds five to six thousand books and approximately one thousand journals, periodicals, research bulletins, and collections. This has created a multidisciplinary classical university library collection with priority given to legal publications.
Foreign-language collections continue to grow through donations from the University’s international friends, including Professors W. Butler (United States), B. Banaszak (Poland), Cs. Varga and A. Péterfalvi (Hungary), H. Schambeck (Austria), R. Arnold (Germany), and A. Skurbaty (Sweden); lawyers R. Kostiv and I. Kotliarchuk (United States); partner universities in Bulgaria, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Moldova, Georgia, Serbia, and Germany; the German Foundation for International Legal Cooperation; and the Embassies of Austria and Hungary in Ukraine.
Ukraine’s only World Intellectual Property Organization depository library was established at the University through the WIPO Publication Depository Library Program. It helps Kyiv University of Law students and researchers, as well as Ukrainian intellectual-property professionals, gain a deeper understanding of WIPO’s activities and the legal regulation and protection of intellectual property. The WIPO Depository Library was created through productive cooperation between Kyiv University of Law and the World Intellectual Property Organization.
To broaden students’ outlook and support their intellectual and personal development, the Library acquires art albums, books on art and painting, historical and local-history publications, classics, and bestsellers from Ukrainian and international literature. These materials support University projects including “Intellectual Property: Masterpieces of Painting for Students”, “Intellectual Property: Literary Treasures for Students”, “Discover Your Region”, and “Steps towards Beauty”.
As an information and sociocultural unit implementing the University’s development strategy, the Research Library supports the educational process and research, advances the integration of education and scholarship, promotes information literacy, and helps users develop the knowledge and skills needed to use information and library technologies in student life and the legal profession.
