The Department of International Law and Branch Legal Disciplines of the Kyiv University of Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was renamed to Department of International and Private Law of the Kyiv University of Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (Order No. 76-OD of September 26, 2025). Since September 11, 2025, it has been headed by a renowned Ukrainian civil-law scholar, Doctor of Law, Professor Vitaly Mykolayovych Chernega.
The Department of International and Private Law of Kyiv University of Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine comprises 26 academic staff members, in particular: professors (Y. L. Boshytskyi, V. M. Chernega, O. D. Bezzubov, O. O. Bryginets, A. Yu. Kovalchuk, I. M. Sopilko, S. Ya. Fursa, E. I. Fursa), associate professors (V. P. Pylypenko, I. V. Atamanchuk, I. P. Bakhnovska, M. M. Guchko, N. K. Isayeva, M. M. Igoshin, Y. G. Korostashivets, N. V. Linnyk, O. V. Melnychenko, L. V. Polunina, O. A. Radzvill, M. M. Sychuk, L. M. Shatalova, D. V. Shkrebets), senior teachers (O. A. Bilous, O. A. Lysak, M. V. Ponomarenko) and a teacher (A. O. Pekar).
The powerful professional potential of the Department of International and Private Law of the Kyiv University of Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine is evidenced by the fact that its members include: four honored lawyers of Ukraine (Y. L. Boshytskyi, V. P. Pylypenko, I. M. Sopilko, S. Ya. Fursa); honorary consul of the Republic of Lithuania in the Poltava region, adviser to the Minister of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine on international humanitarian law (V. P. Pylypenko); member of the scientific advisory councils at the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court of Ukraine (I. M. Sopilko).
Associate Professor of the Department, Candidate of Legal Sciences, Associate Professor I. I. Vashchynets, Senior Lecturer of the Department, Doctor of Philosophy in Law M. V. Ponomarenko, Lecturer of the Department, Candidate of Legal Sciences A. O. Pekar, combine academic activities with advocacy.
The Department of International and Private Law of the Kyiv University of Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine conducts intellectual and creative activities in the field of higher education and science, aimed at the transfer, assimilation, multiplication and use of knowledge, skills and other competences among students at the first (bachelor’s), second (master’s) and third (PhD) levels of higher education in specialties 081 “Law”, D8 “Law”, 293 “International Law”, D9 “International Law”.
Department of International and Private Law Kyiv University of Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine:
- Provides teaching international law, law of the European Union, civil law and civil process, family law, international private law, labor law and social security law, economic law and economic process, land law and many others both compulsory and elective courses, according to the profile of the department, provided by the educational-professional and educational-scientific programs “Law” and “International Law”;
- Conducts scientific activity according to the profile of the department;
- Enhances professional competence and teaching skills;
- Adheres to the norms of pedagogical ethics and morality, respects the dignity of students, instills in them a love for Ukraine, educates them in the spirit of Ukrainian patriotism and respect for the Constitution of Ukraine and state symbols of Ukraine;
- Develops students and postgraduates independence, initiative, creative abilities;
- Obeys the prescriptions of the laws of Ukraine “About education”, “About higher education”, other regulatory requirements in the field of educational activities, including local acts of the Kyiv University of Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
In addition, most members of the Department of International and Private Law of Kyiv University of Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine engage in professional activities through participation in professional and public associations.

The educational and methodological work of the department is carried out in the following areas:
- improvement of working training programs in disciplines;
- making appropriate changes to work programs in accordance with changes in current legislation and recommendations of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine;
- development and preparation for printing of textbooks, methodical guides and recommendations for all academic disciplines of the department;
- preparation of individual work plans of department teachers and their approval;
- control over adherence to the schedule of consultations, individual work by teachers of the department;
- preparation by teachers of complex control works in order to determine the level of residual knowledge of students;
- listening to teachers’ reports on the implementation of individual plans, which provide for all types of teacher’s work
Achieving the set goal presupposes the determination of the following main tasks facing the department:
- structural development of the department in accordance with the needs of the educational process and scientific activity of the university;
- the study of world scientific achievements and trends in the development of legal science and, based on them, the improvement of the quality of scientific research carried out at the department;
- strengthening the scientific and pedagogical potential of the department of international law and comparative jurisprudence by encouraging employees to carry out scientific and research activities and, on its basis, to prepare educational and methodological literature to ensure the relevant educational disciplines taught;
- raising the level of educational services for the training of highly qualified legal specialists of the appropriate educational levels who possess deep theoretical and applied knowledge and are able to use them in their further professional activities and are competitive in the modern labor market;
- creation of appropriate conditions for the harmonious development of the personality of the future legal specialist, formation of high moral qualities, respect for the law, patriotism and social responsibility;
- ensuring and protecting the rights and interests of higher education applicants, in particular regarding the organization of the educational process;
- promotion of educational, scientific and creative activities of higher education students by organizing scientific, mass cultural, sports, health and other events;
- promotion of a healthy lifestyle, safe behavior, prevention of offenses committed by students of higher education;
- intensification of the work of the curatorship institute and the headship of academic groups;
- establishing and maintaining relations with the management of law faculties of other educational institutions;
- the participation of the department in the international activities of the university, in particular: the implementation of permanent measures for the development and strengthening of mutually beneficial international scientific cooperation within the framework of bilateral and multilateral agreements of the faculty with scientific institutions and organizations of foreign countries and strengthening the ties of the department’s teachers with scientists of the world’s leading universities; participation of the department’s teachers in international and all-Ukrainian scientific, scientific-practical, scientific-methodological conferences, seminars, symposia, etc., as well as student Olympiads, competitions with the aim of attracting the most capable students to scientific and research work, expanding and deepening the sphere of scientific interests of the department’s teachers; implementation of the university’s international cooperation plans with foreign partners in the field of educational, methodological and scientific work in accordance with the agreements concluded by the university.
The strategic goal of the department is to ensure a high level of teaching of disciplines, constant expansion and updating of special courses, active development and self-improvement of teachers, their participation in scientific life; development of partnership relations with related departments of higher educational institutions of Ukraine.
